Reasons for emergency dental appointments?
A serious injury to the mouth or your teeth that requires immediate treatment (such as toothache, knocked-out, chipped, or loose teeth).
You may have a dental emergency if:
- You’re in pain and/or bleeding from the mouth
- You’ve taken a knock to the face or mouth
- One or more of your teeth are loose
- Your gums or cheeks swollen
If any of the above points apply to you, we encourage you to call our dental practice immediately. You’ll speak with one of our friendly and empathetic members of staff who will advise you on how to manage pain and explain your best course of action. Our dentist in Catford is dedicated to helping you and resolving your dental emergency as soon as possible.
Steps to handle different dental emergencies?
- Toothache
Floss your teeth before rinsing your mouth with warm water to wash away debris. Hold a cold compress to your cheek to decrease swelling. Do not apply a gel painkiller as it will burn.
- Chipped or broken tooth
Remove any debris by rinsing your mouth with warm water. Use a cold compress to soothe pain. You can also take anti-inflammatory medication – do not use aspirin or gel.
- Knocked-out tooth
There’s every chance of saving your knocked-out tooth as long as you act quickly. Follow these steps:
- Pick up the tooth by the bottom without touching the root
- Remove dirt and debris by rinsing the tooth with water
- Do your best to leave any tissue fragments in tact
- Place the tooth back in its socket if you can – otherwise, put it in a cup of salt water
- Loose or dislodged tooth
If possible, gently move the tooth back into place and bite down to prevent it from moving. A cold compress can help with the pain and swelling. You may also take over-the-counter medication if desired.
